In a recent study published by the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, researchers compared two types of programs for individuals suffering from ankle sprains. The study looked at 74 patients who had suffered a sprain and compared the outcomes between those who performed a home exercise program independently and those who received manual therapy combined with supervised therapeutic exercises. The researchers concluded that the group who received manual therapy and supervised exercises reported a 70% reduction in pain at 4 weeks and greater than 92% reduction at 6 months, as well as 97% full function with daily activities. In contrast, the independent group only saw a 39% reduction at 4 weeks and 80% reduction at 6 months. Wisconsin Orthopedic Physical Therapy emphasizes manual therapy with all conditions and strongly believes in one-on-one patient care with all aspects of treatment. Although this study focuses on sprained ankles, early intervention with the combination of manual therapy and therapeutic exercise can provide superior results with almost all orthopedic conditions. I think its a very common injury. Is it true that Ankle sprains happen when the foot twists, rolls or turns beyond its normal motions.??

Yes. The most common type of sprain is what we can an “inversion sprain” where the ankle rolls inward. This puts excessive stretch on the anterior talofibular ligament (the most commonly sprained ligament in the human body) and actually causes microtears of the ligament. Although this type of injury is very common in athletes, I have seen it in a variety of ages and populations. The earlier you can see a physical therapist after an ankle sprain, the shorter the recovery!
